What is Sleep Apnea?

Apnea means cessation of breath

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when passages are blocked so severely that the sleeper is unable to breathe. Sleep apnea can occur without snoring or obstruction. It is a life-threatening disease and those who suspect that OSA is the problem, whether or not they snore, should consult a physician or sleep center for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

How serious is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Prognosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Eliminating the obstruction usually reverses the commonly associated pulmonary and systemic hypertension and cardiac problems of obstructive apnea. Untreated, sleep apnea can greatly affect daytime functioning. Sleep apnea sufferers have a tendency to fall asleep during the day, a potentially deadly consequence of the disorder.
